I've left off DHHS and Penquis, but if you need help and end up talking to Brenda Harrington, she is a wealth of information about those and other agencies. Please always remember you can call me at 207-596-0028 and I will do my utmost to connect you to the right agency.

Brenda Harrington is the General Assistance Administrator. Rockland's General Assistance Office is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. The office is located in the rear of City Hall to protect individual's confidentiality. People are encouraged to call 594-0302 and make an appointment with the General Assistance Director. If the administrator is not available at the time of the call, a message should be left on the answering machine with a name and telephone number. The administrator will return the call as soon as possible. IF IT IS AN EMERGENCY DURING NON-BUSINESS HOURS, CALL 593-9132 (Knox Regional Communication Center Dispatch) to get a message to the General Assistance Director. To protect the applicant's confidentiality, staff at City Hall are discouraged from becoming involved with walk-ins and telephone calls and will refer the client to call the General Assistance telephone number to leave a message.
General Assistance is intended to provide immediate aid within 24 hours of an application for people who are unable to maintain themselves or their families with basic necessities (food, shelter, utilities, fuel, clothing and other items when they are essential). It provides a safety net when citizens have no other resources available to them. In other words, it is the last resort when all other resources have been utilized.
Please contact City Hall, at 207-594-0303 before you find yourself in the unfortunate position of facing a tax lien. I know how hard it is to ask for help: I've been there, and I still have times when I find myself up against a wall. I know what it is like to not have the money for your taxes or food. Please, please, do not suffer silently.
You can call Anne Beebe-Center at 207-594-2060 or Ed Mazurek at 207-594-5647
This is a group of amazing people working to make sure that no one goes without heat this winter, or has to chose between heat and food.
